I think you're right. It's not that conservatives ARE happier, it's just that they're conditioned to SAY they are whenever asked.

I'm reminded of that scene in the classic silent film, The Battleship Potemkin (Yes, THAT Potemkin...as in Potemkin Village fame) where the rank and file sailors mutiny over having worms in their borsch...and the Captain orders them all into formation on the deck. The Captain then asks, "Who Liked their Borsch? and all the Officers and Petty officers immediately raised their hands. Republicans are sort of like those Officers and Petty Officers...they are eager to curry favor with their Captains...because their prosperity depends on it.

Otherwise, I think Democrats and Liberals in general have good reason to be depressed. The maddening helplessness we feel in the face of a full-on, in-your-face assault by the right wing is enough to depress even the most optomistic among us.

The '06 elections are the the only things keeping me going now. That's where I find my hope.

We’re supposed to smile, smile, smile. And if we aren’t happy, then, as this article so nicely points out, we must be sinners.

or losers not able to grab what you want

think positive, always positive whatever happens - think of Zaphod Beeblebrox and his "peril-Sensitive" Sunglasses, at the first sign of danger turning completely black, thereby making him feel safe - and able to smile, smile, smile

This gets at the heart of what's wrong with America. It's the pressure to pretend that we feel things we don't and that we don't feel things we do.

In American today, it's a medical problem to be depressed. If you're feeling low - no matter how rational your misery may be - then you not only need, you are expected, to take pills to alleviate your depression.

We're taught that nothing good can come out of anger, never considering that it was anger that guided the founding fathers, and for the Christian fundies, it's what motivated Jesus. (Or is the story of the moneychangers not to be taken seriously?)
