Dubya didn't lower the bar, he raised it, we will never again elect someone with such a thin resume as the current President possesed in 2000. I won't be ready to write off Al Gore until the fat lady sings in Denver and even then the actions of many independents show signs of a possible third party type unity ticket, especially if the Dems came outta Denver lookin' like GOP-Lite. I want to see the numbers! Show me some actual votes... We have three top tier candidates and a second string that is pretty deep... This is the first totally open Presidential race in my lifetime... and I think there was but one in my mother's lifetime, she being born in'31... 1952, if memory serves... Granted a goodly sized group are the Super Delegates... practically every Democrat you ever heard of... but the overwhelming majority will be picked in the primaries and state conventions and none of them are legally bound to do anything but show up... I would also like to see Obama on the ticket. Much of organized religion appeals less and less to me. It is true that many denominations are involved in genuine and much needed charity work. My own church, the Roman Catholic Church, and the numerous religious orders, reach out to millions. But, after American Bishops supported Bush, I stopped going to Mass. You can't be serious about right-to-life issues and support Bush. I don't support the Church's stand on abortion, anyway. And, I certainly will not and cannot support an administration that has caused thousands of deaths and massive destruction. The right-wing fundamentalists seem to be all about hating others, condemning others, and raising money. Then, there are the society churches. These are large denominations in well-to-do areas that spend millions on building ever-larger structures to proclaim their own wealth. These are the compassionate conservatives? These are the faith-based charities that are supposed to take over the task of helping the poor, the sick, the abused and disadvantaged? How big is their social service budget in relationship to their building budget? Here in Indianapolis, we have huge churches, with enormous facilities, no expense spared. One very well-heeled congregation of Presbyterians just announced completion of a $12 million dollar expansion of their church.(Which was already huge.) Correct me if I am wrong, but Jesus didnt have a huge church to spread his message. He preached in villages, by lakes, on hillsides, and walked to his destinations. He stayed with friends and supporters of his message. Again, I may have this wrong, but I thought he wanted us to give generously to the poor and the sick and the outcasts of society. I dont remember him saying we should spend $12 million dollars on additions to our churches. How many programs would that fund to help inner city children? To stock food pantries. To house the homeless? To help care for the elderly poor? To care for abused and neglected children? To fund medical clinics for the poor? To help refugees in war-torn countries? To donate to schools? The needs of suffering humanity are great, but there is NO need for a plush church additon, where wealthy people can pretend to spread the message of Christ in luxury, while emitting hubris from every pore. You can bet the farm that most of this congregation are Republicans and many still support Bush. Their hypocrisy is overwhelming. It is the sin of hypocrisy that is mentioned most in the New Testament, not murder, not theft, not adultery: HYPOCRISY! I can still find Christ in the woods, by the creek, in the fields, in the face of children, in the face of suffering, but I cannot find it in such churches.
