Surely, fighting injustice can’t be worth this much!

why not? Injustice kills your soul maybe not that fast as "a skin of fire" - but it can also eat you up - the end is the same

All he would have to do in order to continue for all time with his comfortable, if imperfect, stay here in heaven was to throw down his protest sign

as usual, all depends on the definition - what do you call paradise? What do you call beauty?

the (notso)perfect paradise reminds me of Mr. Bush and his family of "beautiful minds" - it's said, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and if you look at rich people, they try and try and try to buy more and more beauty, but beauty is boring in itself. Look at all the "beautful" trade fairs for millionaires, who are no longer able to enjoy, but have to pay thousands and thousands just for a simple pen - to prove themselves their own "beauty and value"...

paradise = a heaven for consumers?

that is what we want from future? Pastries, nice colors and houses or anything else the Divine Dollar or Mighty Hollywood can give us?

reminds me of something...

you seem to describe a modern version of "Cockaigne", also known as "Luilekkerland " or "Schlaraffenland"? Where only fools, lazybones and liars are awarded while hardworking, decent and caring people are thrown out (Version of Ludwig Bechstein)...

btw: except for accepting a Big Leader...
i love iowas end of the story ;-)

I've been enjoying Last Chance Democracy Cafe for a very long time, but have never posted. I think Steven has come up with an extremely clever ploy to bring out at least one lurker. You see:

The Parthenon is in Athens,
The Pantheon is in Rome.

(Both incrudible buildings, incidentally, but completely different.)

From Steve: Ouch. (I'll destroy the evidence at some point.)

I would have went with "well, it's about friggin' time". I further suspect that nobody "fails" the test (eventually).

"Congratulations, Horace. You've passed The Test," God said. The blinding white light dimmed - well, not dimmed, per se, just became less... blinding - and suddenly Horace found himself at the foot of a massive golden stair, stretching up to forever. At the foot of the stair, standing just on the first riser, was God. God wore no "Hi, I'm God" t-shirt, no nametag, no visual indication of being a deity. But Horace knew it was God just the same.

God smiled.

"Think of how differently history would treat Nathan Hale if, before being executed by the British, instead of saying, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country,” he had developed writer’s block and was forced to settle for, “Hey, I tried my best.” "

Around 20 years ago, I remember seeing a reporter or documentary or something on TV that made a completely inapt and inept reference to "Nathan Hale" as "the man without a country". Obviously this guy had no idea who Nathan Hale was (and was confusing him with the author of that 19th century story, Edward Everett Hale, in a context that was also completely dissimilar to that story).
