Even further into the looking glass

This is getting scarier and scarier.  Now were told by Rumsfeld that opponents of the administration’s pathetically incompetent Iraq policy are being manipulated by Zarqawi and bin Laden.

Here are Rummy’s own words (from his visit to Rush Limbaugh) from Think Progress:

There have always been people who have opposed wars…I think we just have to accept it, that people have a right to say what they want to say, and to have an acceptance of that and recognize that the terrorists, Zarqawi and bin Laden and Zawahiri, those people have media committees.
They are actively out there trying to manipulate the press in the United States. They are very good at it.

So you tell me, which is scarier — that Rumsfeld is low enough to smear his opponents in this fashion, or that he may actually believe this stuff?

At first I wasn’t too worried because Rummy was only addressing Rush’s daily meeting of the kool-aid kids Klub…but I’m beginning to worry that more traditional media are picking up this nonesense and repeating it.

As for the statement itself, it doesn’t surprise me….one of the basic tenents of propaganda as a technique is never tell just a small lie. It’s got to be big enough to be believeable.

It’s not too far a stretch from there to declaring that anyone against the war is in league with terrorists. Remember those detention centers in the US that Halliburton is building?
