That is a brilliant idea.

I think the idea has merit, but I also see where there is opportunity for abuse, so it would have to be structured in such a way as to maximize the good parts and minimize the bad. I wonder if Donna has floated this with any of her local liberal politicians? The main thing, in my view, is to get politics out of a buyer’s & seller’s market.

I worry that this might not be fast enough to help. We don’t have two decades. By then the US will be toast, possibly literally.
Still, I’m willing to join. Our company has suffered greatly in this economy, but we’re still alive, barely.

I work for a very large, very successful progressive/liberal-minded company. I wonder if we could play some sort of role in this… I guess I doubt the powers that be would want to hitch the wagon to such a partisan cause, especially since we’re a publicly traded company, but still… you never know. Despite my working here and my close knowledge of what this company is like, I am still amazed on a regular basis with some of the things we do (and I mean that in a good way). It’s worth asking around the office, see what some of the top-level execs think.

Thanks for the great comments! I’ve written about this idea to many different websites, Americablog, Center for American Progress, Consortium News, Kos, and several others and didn’t get a response…not a word…nada…zip…made me wonder if they don’t enjoy the begging for money to stay alive…I’m also starting to worry that we’re in the throes of a national battered woman syndrome…only ours is a cycle of emotional paralysis instead of physical violence…
I’m just an ordinary, middle-aged progressive business owner and burnt-out activist who would love to contribute to causes I believe in, but the Bush economy has been tough on me and my clients…I just thought it could be a network where progressive businesses could support each other and our “new media” infrastructure…and our online customers could rest assured their dollars are going to support other progressives and our organizations.
I admit to being mercenary…the whole idea came about while I was trying to figure out new ways to get traffic to my website. I sell a great product, for an excellent price, and have many loyal clients who rave about my work, but getting seen in cyberspace is daunting…and I figure I’m not alone in this…
Although I was beginning to feel alone in thinking my proposal had any merit…
I know it will involve building a website, which I’m happy to do…and figure out some sort of screening process, but I’m a smart gal and an ex-cop so naturally suspicious and am very adept in background checks…and with fine group of advisors such as the folks who read the cafe to help me work out the kinks in the idea, I actually think it could work!
