Biden rocks?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

I’m sitting in my living room, my laptop perched on top of my outstretched legs, watching the Democratic debate, pining away for Al Gore.  Still . . . how did that old song go?  Oh yeah: “And if you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.”

So, if these are my choices, who do I choose?  The answer, I’m afraid is that I don’t know yet: as wimpy as it may be, color me undecided.  No one has closed the deal.

But what’s astonished me during the debate, to be honest, is how good Joe Biden has looked so far.  His answer to the idiotic “will you guarantee Iran won’t get nuclear weapons” question, in which he noted the far greater risk in Pakistan, was by far the best.  He was also the first one to go after Rudy.  He’s been funny and on point.

I very much doubt I’ll end up supporting Biden, or even that he’ll ever become a credible candidate, but I have to admit he’s looked good tonight.

Not THAT sovereign

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

As you know, Iraq is now a sovereign nation, America having graciously returned its sovereignty on June 28, 2004.  But there’s sovereign and then again there’s sovereign.  And the sovereignty of a nation under military occupation is, shall we say, something of a state of mind.

And right now the otherwise hopelessly deadlocked “government” of the sovereign nation of Iraq is getting ready to be a royal pain in the ass to the Bush Administration.  It seems that Iraqis of all ethnic stripes have finally found something to agree on (other than hating Americans): they want American contractors to be subject to prosecution under Iraqi law.

For some strange reason the Iraqis don’t think they can trust America to bring lawless contractors to justice.  Go figure.

(AP) Iraq bill would lift contractor immunity

The Iraqi government on Tuesday approved draft legislation lifting immunity for foreign private security companies, sending the measure to parliament, a spokesman said.

The question of immunity has been one of the most serious disputes between the U.S. and the Iraqi government since a Sept. 16 shooting involving Blackwater USA guards that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.

*  *  *

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the draft law approved Tuesday would overturn an immunity order known as Decree 17 that was issued by L. Paul Bremer, who ran the American occupation government until June 2004.

“It will be sent to the parliament within the coming days to be ratified,” he told The Associated Press.

Al-Dabbagh did not single out Blackwater but said: “According to this law, all security companies will subjected to the Iraqi criminal law and must obey all the country’s legal regulations such as: registration, customs, visas, etcetera.”

Watching this play out is going to be fascinating.  There’s simply no way the Bush Administration can allow this to go into effect.  Given the overextended status of the US military, Bush desperately needs the rent-a-soldiers in Iraq.  Absent them, he would be forced to dramatically cut back military operations — or perhaps even, God forbid, follow the will of the people and withdraw completely.

Yet, recruiting US and other Western civilians willing to work as contractors in Iraq absent legal immunity under Iraqi law would be next to impossible.  (Would you want to be subject to prosecution in an Iraqi court?)

So ultimately the Bush Administration is going to have to find a way to squash this proposal and leave the immunity to prosecution under Iraqi law in place (while perhaps acquiescing to placing contractors under military justice), sovereignty be damned.

Hey, if they really wanted to be a truly sovereign nation, they shouldn’t have asked us to invade them in the first place

They don’t even bother to pretend anymore

Monday, October 29th, 2007

There once was a time, if I remember correctly, when the corporate apologists Bush puts in charge of regulating the very industries they serve would at least offer lip service to the public interest.  Today, some don’t even bother to pretend.

(NY Times)  Strengthening of Consumer Agency Opposed by Its Boss

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 — The top official for consumer product safety has asked Congress in recent days to reject legislation that would strengthen the agency that polices thousands of consumer goods, from toys to tools.

On the eve of an important Senate committee meeting to consider the legislation, Nancy A. Nord, the acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, has asked lawmakers in two letters not to approve the bulk of legislation that would increase the agency’s authority, double its budget and sharply increase its dwindling staff.

Ms. Nord opposes provisions that would increase the maximum penalties for safety violations and make it easier for the government to make public reports of faulty products, protect industry whistleblowers and prosecute executives of companies that willfully violate laws.

The measure is an effort to buttress an agency that has been under siege because of a raft of tainted and dangerous products manufactured both domestically and abroad. In the last two months alone, more than 13 million toys have been recalled after tests indicated lead levels of almost 200 times the safety ceiling.

Let’s add things up: The Colorado Rockies were on fire heading into the World Series, having won 21 of their last 22 games.  Then, right before the Series began, the media was full of stories about the (previously reported) fact that the Rockies are “the closest thing Major League Baseball has to a faith-based club.”  Indeed,

The front office runs the franchise based on what it describes as Christian principles, and it consciously recruits players judged to have “moral values” and “character.”

Then just that suddenly, the Rockies were swept 4-to-zip in the World Series.

You almost have to wonder whether God was trying to tell us something.

Some good news

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

It appears that a lot of congressional Democrats have gotten the message on Iran: no war, no how.

(AP, by TPM) Many Democrats opposed to war with Iran

Still reeling from the fallout of authorizing the Iraq war five years ago, congressional Democrats are determined to put themselves early on record as opposing military action in Iran.

In recent days, many Democrats have gone to great lengths to denounce President Bush’s strategy on Iran, including his decision to label Tehran’s Quds military force as a terrorist group and his statement that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to “World War III.”

Democrats also are jumping on Bush’s latest war spending request as proof that the White House is considering airstrikes on Iran’s underground uranium enrichment facilities. Bush wants $88 million to continue developing a “bunker-busting” bomb designed to destroy deeply buried targets such as those in Iran.

And in case there were doubts about the Democrats’ position, Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin introduced legislation Thursday that would require Bush to seek Congress’ blessing before taking any military action in Iran.

The irritating thing about Maureen Dowd

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

I want to hate Dowd, I really do.  And every time she turns her snarky prose against Al Gore, to name just one notable example, I do hate her.  But then just when I’ve contentedly settled into my contempt, she’ll turn on a dime and burn Bush & Co. in that way that only she can manage.  As Winston once said here:

Always approach Dowd the way a wise mate (if there were such a thing) would approach a black widow spider: you can enjoy the beauty of her occasional anti-Bush tirades, but never forget that she’ll turn on you in the end.

At the end of the day, I think Dowd is essentially soulless: devoid of commitment to anything aside from her own ego.  And in times like these, with so much is on the line, clever but politically amoral just doesn’t cut it.

Still . . . when she’s hot she’s hot
