Juan Coles “Informed Comment” has a pretty frightening post. He quotes a friend as writing,
“Another friend, a Sunni sheikh of the Shammar tribe noted to me that thousands of former officers are prepared to assault the G[reen] Z[one]. It is no longer a matter of can they do it, they are only mulling over the timing. The breach of the Green Zone security the other day was a test of their ability to get in, and not a real attempt at a coup, though it is reported as such.”
The bad news is going to just keep on coming.

It is not going to get better in Iraq. Anyone who thinks so subscribes to magical thinking, like believing in elves. Now, I would like to believe in elves, but there aren’t any. George W. Bush and Flunkies, John McCain and Syncophants, believe in elves. They must, because what they have done, are doing, and have proposed to do, is not and will not, in the future, WORK! Since the daily REALITY in Iraq proves this to be so, and since this REALITY is painfully and horrifically obvious, it is apparent that they are depending on elves to stop the raging inferno. What else is there to say?!!! They keep pouring money into a fiery maw with no success of any kind. They keep sending men and women back to the abyss on their 3rd, 4th, 5th tours of duty. They keep changing the reasons for being there. They keep changing the catch-phrases and have gone from “stay the course” to “benchmarks” to “we can’t stay, but we can’t leave,” and that hasnt stopped the escalation of horror. So, I am left with no other explanation than the one about the elves. Dubya wont say it out loud, but he believes in the elves. This is why he refuses to withdraw from Iraq. He believes the elves will save him from infamy and save Iraq from total destruction. He will never have to admit he was wrong. He will never have to think of the carnage he has caused. He will be revered as King Of the Elves. Thus, he runs around the world, saying foolish things, and smiling foolish smiles, because he know the elves have his back, and the elves will save the day.He can live with himself because he believes in the elves.
The rest of us, the nasty, irreverent realists can be ignored. We may cry out that no one else’s son or daughter should die in Iraq; that the wheels came off a long time ago; that the civil war is in full swing; and that more troops will only result in an Iraqi Vietnam. Dubya will dream on. As for the politicians, they will insist that politics is more important than human life. They will quibble and pontificate. They will talk about “saving face,” when they should be concerned with saving lives. They will defer to committees, set up more committees, preach diplomacy when it is too little, too late, and the death toll will continue to rise. Common sense and decency will be thrown to the wind. I wish there were magical elves. But, I can’t believe in them anymore. I dont believe in politicians, either.

back in Middle Age - what a mess
and what a solid proof of stupidity - not to be able to see the consequences of your actions. Because exactly that was, what was said by everyone (except for the blue-eyed american neocons): start the war and you will turn inside out in the Middle East
and they were right - so what would an intelligent species do now? They would learn from the mistake and listen to the ones OPPOSING the war, the ones with the proven intelligence, the proven ability to foresee reality. What do humans do instead? They still follow the money and obey to Bush and the Arrogant American Aristocracy…
oh, that’s easy
those “smart guys” simply don’t believe to have done anything wrong - they simply still believe to have the right to steal, maim and torture, because they are the Chosen People (by god, by birth, by dollar whatever)…
and because they don’t lose anything they care for, because they don’t have to pay for their arrogance and egotism - why should their brains UNDERSTAND what they have done?
so don’t worry about ” those smart guys” - they will live happily and in pompous decadence until they die - and even then they will be happy, because every powerful man will at least pretend to mourn about their death and say how “great and wonderful” they would have been
that’s the difference between them and us - we are measured by what we do, they are measured by what they have

Steve, or anyone else interested, you might want to pick up a book by Elizabeth de la Vega titled “U.S. v. George W. Bish et al.” which will come out in December. Reminiscent of episodes 49.1 - 49.3. There’s a short review in Saturday’s “Truthout”. I’ve read several of her articles in other publications and she is a dogged prosecutor.
