The “old fool” factor

Maybe it’s crass for me to even point this out, but Fred Thompson has a problem standing in the path of his presidential aspirations (and, no, I’m not talking about the fact he’s utterly unqualified for the office): no the problem I’m referencing is blond and beautiful and about one/sixth of his age (she’s 40ish and he’s, what, about 114 in wrinkle time?).  Her name is Jeri.  And, no, she’s no bimbo.

But I’m not sure how much that’s going to matter.  There is a deeply ingrained cultural cliché about wealthy and powerful men who marry someone who could be one of their daughters’ classmates — especially when the woman in question is blond and beautiful.  It usually involves the phrase, “old fool.”

Whether or not it should be, this will be a factor in how some voters view Thompson: and not a favorable one.
