The daily doom: walrus edition

To repeat myself, yet again: Does a day ever go by anymore without another terrifying revelation about global warming?

(AP) Loss of sea ice could harm walrus

Federal marine mammal experts in Alaska studying the effects of global warming on walrus, polar bears and ice seals warn there are limit to the protections they can provide.

They can restrict hunters, ship traffic and offshore petroleum activity, but that may not be enough if the animals’ basic habitat — sea ice — disappears every summer.

“Ultimately it’s beyond my scope,” said Joel Garlich-Miller, a walrus expert for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Anchorage. “I can’t make ice cubes out there.”

Garlich-Miller said 3,000 to 4,000 mostly young walrus died this year in stampedes on land on the Russian side of the Chukchi Sea, the body of water touching Alaska and Russia just north of the Bering Strait. Instead of spending the summer spread over sea ice, thousands of walruses were stranded on land in unprecedented numbers for up to three months.

This is the type of global warming story that gets to me the most.  Visions of a future apocalypse of receding coastlines and massive hunger, disease and human misery are scary enough, but this is something that is happening now right before our eyes.  In all of our mighty stupidity, we are willy nilly rewriting the genetic code of our planet and every living thing to one degree or another is being affected.

It’s here. It’s real. And, the worst is yet to come.

To add to the Planet’s woes: This evening on the Discovery Channel I watched a program that focused on the volcanic activity of the Hawaiian Islands. For some reason, I thought Hawaii was an offshoot of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Instead, the Islands are a result of a “Hot Spot,” an area of the earth’s crust that is not connected to the grinding of tectonic plates but is rather like a large hole into the crust from which lava flows upward. The Hot Spot has been there for 80 million years. It formed the Islands and is still forming them. It is moving forward to form more volcanic land from lava. But the coastline of Oahu, made up of volcanic rock, is deteriorating. Millions of years ago, a chunk fell off, a huge piece of the coastline. They have found definitive evidence of this. It fell into the Pacific and caused a gigantic tsunami. The area above the coastline is one of the rainiest places on earth. The volcanic rock is porous, erodes from water action, and is unstable. A section of the coastline appears to be sinking. It could fall off at any time. If it did, a tsunami 300 ft. high would travel 600MPH across the Pacific, reaching Los Angeles in 4 hr. This gives one pause to ponder. It also gives me one more reason not to move to L.A., though I have never considered doing so. Earthquakes, firestorms, mudslides, droughts and Freeway shootings are the other reasons I am remaining in Indiana, think of it what you will. Also, living anywhere near the current crop of “Personalities” like Brittney Spears or Lindsey Lohan could be bad for your health. Their driving records are not commendable, and even if they cause your death, like, is it Brandi?, they get off Scott Free. So, add “Giant Tsunamis That Will Obliterate L.A.” to the list of reasons to live somewhere else. If Global Warming causes more rain above Oahu(I dont know if it will), then that’s all she wrote.

To hell with the *$## walrus, what’s it going to do to the price of gas? I’m already paying damn near a hundred dollars to fill the tank of my Hummer.

Look at the bright side. The sooner mankind wipes itself out the sooner Gaea can get back to a (more or less) balanced ecology. True, a few species will be missing but that’s not something she hasn’t gone through before.
